Gynecology Services

The Endometriosis Center at Binghamton Gynecology and Fertility offers you the most advanced options available in our region. Working closely with Lourdes Hospital we have some of the most advanced equipment and technology available at our disposal to provide our patients a wide variety of surgical options.
Dr. Kondrup is the only certified advanced laparoscopic surgeon in our area. This means patients will receive many options and alternatives utilizing minimally invasive surgical techniques. Minimally invasive surgery can mean the difference between a same-day surgery (with small incisions) and a five-day hospital stay (with large incisions).

Female Sterilization Overview
Sterilization is also known as tubal ligation and is a surgical procedure that is electively performed to prevent a woman from becoming pregnant. The process of sterilization involves a woman's fallopian tubes being blocked by tying, sealing, or attaching a clip to them. The blocking of the fallopian tubes then provides a barrier, which blocks the path that the sperm would normally travel to fertilize an egg. There are different types of female sterilization, for example:

  • Laparoscopic sterilization (tubal ligation)
  • Postpartum sterilization (tubal ligation)
  • Quinacrine sterilization
  • Essure sterilization

Sterilization by Laparoscopy
Laparoscopic surgery, or "belly button" surgery, has undergone a tremendous amount of progress in recent years. This option affords many patients "minimally invasive" or "small incision" surgeries where a large abdominal incision was once necessary. This minimizes pain, prevents large abdominal incisions and allows the patient to return to normal activities at home and work sooner. Furthermore, the risk of infection and altered bowel function are greatly reduced. This type of surgery requires advanced surgical skills and equipment and is best performed by an experienced surgeon.

Dr. James Dana Kondrup is the region's only laparoscopic surgeon to hold a certificate of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. This affords the patient the best surgical techniques available.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Sterilization

  • Menstrual cycle and/or sexual activity will not be affected
  • Birth control will no longer have to be used
  • No concern about getting pregnant

The Details - Understanding a Laparoscopic Procedure
A laparoscopic procedure is considered to be a "minimally invasive" surgery because only one small incision is made just below the belly button. A laparoscope works like a telescope because it has a bright light and lens. During this procedure the laparoscope inserted into the abdomen through the small incision and allows your doctor to see into the abdomen. Another device is then inserted either through the laparoscope or through a second small incision made near the pubic hairline.

The fallopian tubes are then:

  1. Clipped
  2. Banded
    - No electrical current is used for this procedure and it is our procedure of choice.
  3. Cauterized with electricity from the laparoscope
    - The laparoscope uses electricity (or electrocoagulation) to block the fallopian tubes by burning.

Laparoscopic sterilization is considered an outpatient surgery and only take approximately 30 minutes. In most cases you will be ready to return home within 2 hours following the completion of the surgery.
